The traffic lights at the Kiaat Private Hospital-Penryn intersection are now working
The traffic lights were out of order for more than two months.
After more than two months, the non-functioning traffic lights at the Kiaat Private Hospital-Penryn intersection were finally repaired and have been operational since Monday, June 9.
The City of Mbombela’s (CoM) spokesperson, Joseph Ngala, said the municipality had been aware of the problem and it was always their intention to repair them.
“We made a promise and kept it, because we understand that the road is one of the busiest in Mbombela. While we were in the process of repairing the traffic lights, we ensured pointsmen were deployed during peak hours to avoid congestion,” he said.

Ngala said it took two months to repair as a mini substation supplying the lights’ electricity was damaged.
He said other non-functional traffic lights would be attended to in due course.
“It is not a one-day job, but we are going to repair them. We urge motorists to be patient. The public is encouraged to report any damage, especially when noticing traffic lights being tampered with.”
Motorists are now urging the CoM to also repair the broken traffic lights on Belladonna, Anderson and Bosch streets, as well as on Percy Fitzpatrick and Dr Enos Mabuza drives.
