Casper the Kruger white lion being treated for possible anthrax

Casper once roamed with his three brothers, now he’s alone and vulnerable.

The ‘Latest Sightings – Kruger’ Facebook group today posted an image of Casper, a beloved male white lion in the Kruger National Park (KNP).

Casper was photographed in the Satara camp with a swollen face and bite marks that had followers concerned.

KNP spokesperson Reynold Thakhuli confirmed that he was darted and treated yesterday (August 13) and that blood samples were taken to determine the cause of the swelling.

Based on the samples, wildlife veterinarians ruled out a possible anthrax disease and treated him with intravenous antibiotics and topical penicillin.

Thakhuli said the bite marks were from attacks by other animals, as Casper is now a nomadic male without a pride.

“Casper is more prone to getting attacked now since he is alone,” Thakhuli said.

Casper once belonged to a pride with three brothers, all of whom have since died.
