SUPERSPAR Crossing in Mbombela adds a sizzle of fun to giving back
Eleven people entered the competition, but only three people made it to final and the winner consumed nine rolls.
To celebrate the festive season, SUPERSPAR Crossing, with well-known Chef Vaaitjie at the helm, hosted a boerewors roll-eating competition this past Saturday, December 13.
The aroma of grilled meat saw carnivores, aka the ‘braai boeties,’ stuffing their cheeks in a boerie-eating competition with a difference.
It was unusual entertainment indeed, bringing much laughter and a healthy dose of competitive spirit.
According to the organiser, Susan Oosthuyse, they realised the local community wanted a different kind of social interaction.
She wanted to create a hands-on and high-energy event.

“Life is too serious not to have fun. Entertainment is mostly music performances, but this time the big mouths and big eaters could interact. We created this event to give the Lowvelders a reason to smile,” she said.
Apart from the fun, SUPERSPAR used the competition as a way to give back amid rising food prices and the high cost of living.
“We know meat is expensive, so we wanted to provide an opportunity to give something to the community.”

Eleven participants had one hour to consume as many boerewors rolls as possible.
Spectators gathered to cheer on the munchers, creating a festive feeling while fostering community spirit. It wasn’t just about the food, it was about the shared experience and joy of a local tradition taken to the extreme. After 60 minutes of intense chomping, the winners were announced.
Anton Engelbrecht’s impressive feat of finishing nine boerewors rolls secured him top spot and the ultimate bragging rights as the Lowveld’s boerewors king. He also received a R1 500 meat voucher.
Wanga Phutsoane consumed eight and received R1 000, and Jurgens van Staden obtained position three after finishing seven rolls and walked away with a R500 meat voucher.
