Sand River and Sabie River low-water bridges closed near Skukuza

The road was closed for the safety of road users as it was overflowing with water.

Heavy flooding has resulted in the emergency closure of key access points in Kruger National Park (KNP) this morning, January 2.

KNP spokesperson, Ray Thakhuli has confirmed that both the Sand River and Sabie River low-water bridges near the Skukuza Rest Camp are currently underwater and impassable for all vehicles.

“The closures follow a night of intense rainfall that has caused river levels to rise rapidly, bringing debris across the causeways. Despite the road closures, Skukuza Airport remains operational, but traditional land access has been severed,” he said.

Thakuli added that a temporary emergency protocol is in place: Access to and from the airport is exclusively via the Selati Bridge, also known as the Shalati Bridge.

This route is strictly reserved for Airlink passengers with valid flight confirmations.

General visitors and day-trippers are prohibited from using this bridge.

Travelers are advised to coordinate with their lodges or transfer operators, as transit times will be significantly affected.
