Kruger Park floods: Latest updates you should know

Kruger National Park staff are prioritising visitor safety amid record floods and ongoing heavy rains.

Kruger National Park staff worked tirelessly today, January 15, to combat the severe weather conditions currently gripping Mpumalanga and Limpopo.

Here are the latest updates on the floods that you need to know:

SANParks carried out a series of staff and visitor evacuations today after continuous rainfall flooded multiple rest camps and entrance gates.

Day visitors are temporarily restricted from entering the park due to safety concerns.

The South African Weather Service predicts further heavy rains and high flood risks over the next two days.

The floods have surpassed the 2000 flood level, marking a record high that could rise further in the coming days.

Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Willie Aucamp expressed his heartfelt condolences over the severe weather conditions , and that he stands in support of SANParks.

SANParks has confirmed that rising water at the Letaba Rest Camp in the Kruger National Park (KNP) has reached the level seen during the 2000 floods. He also confirmed that SANParks has activated its crisis management protocols, which include precautionary evacuations at vulnerable northern camps such as Shingwedzi, Sirheni, and Bateleur, the deployment of emergency response teams to monitor river levels and infrastructure, and close co-ordination with local authorities, disaster management centres, and emergency services.

JP Louw, SANParks’ spokesperson, confirmed that an update on the ongoing situation will be provided tomorrow, January 16.
