Educator’s life cut short in Burgersfort shooting

Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba confirmed that officers arrived to find both victims lying in a passageway, each with gunshot wounds.

Shock and grief have gripped the Burgersfort community after the fatal shooting of 27-year-old educator Thobile Gumede, who was killed in what police suspect was a domestic dispute on Sunday, February 8.

According to Limpopo SAPS, Thobile, a teacher at Good Hope Christian Academy, was allegedly shot by her husband, Jerry Gumede (54), before he turned the gun on himself.

The incident unfolded at around 13:54 on Dirk Winterbach Street, near the Twin City complex in the Burgersfort CBD.

Friends and family say the couple had been experiencing conflict. Leaked WhatsApp messages circulating on social media suggest Thobile had recently moved out of their home in Riba Cross.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba confirmed that officers arrived to find both victims lying in a passageway with gunshot wounds.

“They were transported to a local hospital, where they later succumbed to their injuries,” he said.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Thobile was standing in the passage when an Audi sedan with Gauteng plates stopped beside her.

“The driver exited the vehicle, approached the woman, shot her, and then shot himself. Domestic-related issues cannot be ruled out,” Mashaba added. A pistol, spent cartridges, and additional firearms with live rounds were recovered from the suspect’s vehicle, which has been confiscated as part of the investigation.

On social media, tributes poured in for Thobile, described by colleagues and learners as a humble, loving teacher whose life was tragically cut short.

Limpopo police have opened a case of murder and an inquest. Provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe expressed concern over the incident, urging responsible firearm ownership and encouraging individuals in troubled relationships to seek help before disputes escalate.

* Even though the alleged perpetrator is dead and cannot be prosecuted, the case is still formally registered as murder. This ensures the death is recorded as a crime, investigated, and documented. It also allows for proper forensic work, firearm tracing, and closure for the victim’s family.
