R37 shooting linked to alleged tender dispute

Police are investigating a shooting on the R37 near Mbombela, allegedly linked to a tender dispute.

At around 08:00 this morning, February 12, gunshots were fired at two vehicles, a Ford Ranger and a Nissan NP200, travelling towards Mbombela on the R37 near the Mashishing intersection.

The incident is believed to be linked to a tender dispute, said Mpumalanga police spokesperson Sergeant Thulisile Magagula. Reports indicate that businessmen from Mataffin allegedly blocked Raubex Group from collecting concrete at a construction site near the intersection, claiming they were entitled to a share of the work.

A hawker stationed next to the road told Lowvelder that four men emerged from the bushes shortly after the shooting and were picked up by occupants of a Ford Everest and a Toyota Avanza.

Members of the White River Flying Squad and local security companies attended the scene. No fatalities were reported.

Police confirmed that no arrests have yet been made and that investigations are ongoing.
