White River SPCA appeals to community for kennel revamp

The White River SPCA is calling on business owners and community members to help with a fresh coat of paint, upgraded flooring, improved drainage, and general maintenance to ensure the kennels remain clean, safe, and durable.

White River SPCA is appealing to residents and local business owners for urgent assistance to restore and renovate their kennels that house unwanted and abused animals.

According to the society’s chairperson, Estelle de Villiers, current kennel facilities are worn after years of constant use. The recent rains further deteriorated the structures.

The renovations are aimed at creating a safe, functional and dignified environment for the animals that rely on the SPCA for shelter and protection.

“We are asking community members and business owners to assist us with whatever resources they have to undertake these improvements. If we do not help these animals, no one will. We are pleading for helping hands to come on board,” she emphasised.

De Villiers said the project focuses on essential improvements rather than cosmetic repairs. She stressed that these animals deserve clean, secure and weatherproof spaces while awaiting forever homes.

The SPCA does not receive funding from the government and relies entirely on public donations, fundraising, and occasional grants.

Some branches previously received National Lottery funding, but this was inconsistent, frequently cut, and has now ceased entirely.

“We need structural repairs, a fresh coat of paint, improved flooring, better drainage and general maintenance to ensure the kennels are hygienic and durable. We are also looking for hands-on support to get the work done. These vulnerable animals come to us often highly traumatised; the least we can do is provide them with a safe space. This is not about luxury – it is about dignity and responsible care. Let’s restore the heart of our SPCA,” she urged.

Whether you are a DIY enthusiast, a business owner with spare supplies or a resident wanting to make a difference, your help will be deeply appreciated.

Ways to contribute include supplying building materials such as paint, sealant, kennel panels, roofing materials, drainage solutions or cleaning equipment.

Labour such as carpentry, welding, plumbing, painting, or electrical work would go a long way towards ensuring the SPCA continues its much needed service.

Funds specifically earmarked for the kennel restoration project are also welcomed.
