Lefpa hosts workshop for insurance industry in Mbombela

The Lowveld and Escarpment Fire Protection Association hosted a workshop to update insurers on compliance with the National Veld and Forest Fire Act 101 of 1998.

The Lowveld and Escarpment Fire Protection Association (Lefpa), recently hosted a fire compliance workshop for insurance companies and brokers.

The aim of the event was to bring industry professionals up to date with the National Veld and Forest Fire Act 101 of 1998 (NVFFA).

According to André Scheepers, manager of Lefpa, the NVFFA mandates landowners in South Africa to take proactive, reasonable steps to prevent and combat veld fires.

Compliance requires maintaining firebreaks, possessing firefighting equipment, employing trained personnel, joining local Fire Protection Associations (FPA), and ensuring general safety measures to protect life and property.

“We brought together all insurance companies we work with in the Lowveld to update them on compliance law. This will help them understand exactly what to check for during assessments, and what to do when fires break out and claims are involved. It was about fostering a partnership between our organisation, the insurance sector and the land and property owners,” Scheepers said.

He said several regional FPA’s also attended the workshop to brief attendees on their operations during fire seasons.

They explained their response protocols, as well as specific requirements landowners should meet.
“It was a successful event. All relevant stakeholders were present and we believe it made a significant impact. Insurance companies are up to date on Lefpa’s day-to-day activities and how to process claims,” he concluded.
