CoM begins Barberton service drive

The City of Mbombela has launched a two-week Service Delivery Drive in Barberton, targeting urgent repairs to roads, streetlights, and water infrastructure.

In response to residents’ frustrations over poor service delivery, the City of Mbombela (CoM) has launched a Service Delivery Drive (SDD) to accelerate service provision in the area.

According to the CoM’s executive mayor Cllr Sibongile Makushe-Mazibuko, teams will be in the Barberton area for two weeks.

Each ward councillor has already provided the municipality with a list of specific needs for their respective wards.

“Our plan over the next two weeks is to address the most urgent issues, particularly road infrastructure, as streets are riddled with potholes. We are also focusing on water supply, streetlights, illegal dumping, and faulty traffic lights,” she said.

According to Makushe-Mazibuko, certain streets are beyond repair and will be completely rebuilt.

The municipality also plans to refurbish the bulk sewer line in Ward 5 to prevent future blockages.

The executive mayor urged the public to be patient when traffic is disrupted by the work being done.

“We ask residents to not interfere with the teams. There is a common misconception that locals must be hired for every project but, in this instance, we are utilising municipal workers to get the job done,” Makushe-Mazibuko explained.

She said services would continue with a permanent maintenance team based in Barberton once the campaign concludes.

Addressing August 2025 protest action in the region relating to land allocation, Makushe-Mazibuko clarified that the municipality sells stands, but does not allocate land.

She said the matter of those who had purchased land from the former Umjindi Local Municipality has been administratively finalised and was awaiting council approval.

Community members called on the CoM to continuously maintain infrastructure and to prioritise Barberton residents for employment opportunities.

Makushe-Mazibuko said the municipality plans to provide several local businesses with equipment to boost their operations.
