The White River Magistrate’s Court heard today, March 13, that three new witnesses have provided statements in the case against Marco Schalekamp.

This followed a ruling denying the state’s application to revoke his bail.

The three individuals will now be included in the list of people Schalekamp is prohibited from contacting.

Schalekamp’s defence questioned the status of the newly introduced witnesses, arguing that they had not yet been formally confirmed and that one of them is a friend of Schalekamp.

The state countered that any person who provides a statement automatically becomes a state witness.

The state’s application to revoke Schalekamp’s bail followed an alleged breach of his bail conditions.

According to investigating officer Sergeant Mxolisi Keis, Schalekamp failed to inform authorities when he travelled to Fochville, and stated that the town is located in North West province.

Keis said this violated his bail conditions, which stated that he could only reside in Gauteng.

Schalekamp’s advocate, Piet Pistorius, argued that the town is, in fact, in Gauteng, and there had thus been no violation.

In the court’s judgment today, Magistrate Sifiso Mabilane denied the state’s application but ordered that Schalekamp’s bail conditions be revised for clarity.

The court ordered the following bail conditions:

• Schalekamp’s new residential address is recorded as Waterkloof Ridge in Pretoria, and he must report to the Brooklyn Police Station on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 06:00 and 17:00.
• He is prohibited from entering the Mpumalanga magisterial district until the conclusion of the case, except when he is required to appear in the magistrate’s court.
• He may not leave the City of Tshwane without obtaining permission from the investigating officer. To do so, he must submit a valid itinerary detailing his movements and keep the investigating officer informed of his whereabouts.
• He must attend all court appearances and related postponements until excused by the court and until a verdict is delivered.
• He may not communicate with, obstruct or intimidate any state witnesses, including Karel van Staden, Christiaan Mauritz and Xander Gunther.

The charges against Schalekamp stem from a shooting incident that occurred in the early hours of June 5, 2025, near the White River Rugby Club.

Pieter Burger was fatally shot at the scene and Arno van Niekerk sustained life-threatening injuries but survived.

Schalekamp was found in his vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds to his face and neck.

The matter was postponed to May 8 and has been transferred to the Nelspruit Regional Court.
