Lowvelders rise against cancer at annual relay

Lowvelders shed a few tears during the Luminaria Ceremony at the CANSA Relay for Life fundraiser.

Nearly 70 teams in colourful outfits took part in the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) Relay for Life, walking around Laerskool Laeveld’s rugby field on March 13 in support of cancer patients.

Despite the wet weather, Lowvelders joined in solidarity to listen to survivors and caretakers’ stories to give hope and raise awareness.

This year’s fundraiser hosted special live entertainment and games to keep Lowvelders energised for the 12-hour rally. A new game, The Amazing Race, challenged attendees to answer health and screening questions with their ‘passports’ and compete in fun activities. Other entertainment included Zippy the Clown and music from local artists.

Attendees also participated in the special Luminaria Ceremony by lighting a candle to remember those who lost or won their battles with cancer, and those who are still fighting the disease. Local sponsors also came together to make the event a reality. CANSA volunteers thanked SPAR for providing food for the survivors. They also thanked their main sponsors, Astron and Doug’s Hiring, as well as all the Lowvelders and local businesses who showed their support.

“We look forward to a world where there is no more cancer,” Sandra Jacobs, a volunteer, shared.
