Police, traffic enforcement, border management, the South African National Defence Force and community policing structures attended a press briefing in Mbombela today, June 27.

“We are gathered here today, on the N4, for the provincial launch of our state of readiness ahead of the anticipated national demonstration,” Mkhwanazi told the gathering. “This launch is not a show of force. It is a declaration of preparedness, discipline and constitutional duty.”
Mkhwanazi said the role of law enforcement officials is to protect property, rights and peace during community protests. “Members, we expect you to be restrained, impartial and respectful. You are the guardians of order and the protectors of rights,” he said.

He added that if law enforcement is to use force, it must be lawful.
Mkhwanazi urged protest organisers to co-operate with law enforcement and keep all gatherings peaceful.
Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports indicate that the Lebombo border post has seen a surge of Mozambican nationals returning to their home country. Lowveld Media has requested comment from authorities and awaits a response.
