Two pedestrians left critical after being struck by bakkie in Lydenburg
Two people were critically injured and hospitalised after being hit by a bakkie while trying to cross Lydenburg's Voortrekker Street.
Two pedestrians were critically injured after they were hit by a bakkie in Lydenburg’s Voortrekker Street.
The incident occurred this evening, July 4, just before 20:00.
According to eyewitnesses, the two people, a man and a woman, were trying to cross the busy thoroughfare when they were hit.
They were allegedly running to the other side of the road when the incident happened.
The bakkie collided with both and in the process flung the man about 5m onto the pavement on the opposite side of the road.

Steelburger/Lydenburg News spoke to the driver of the Chevrolet bakkie. He told the newspaper that the pair seemed intoxicated.
“I didn’t have any time to react,” he said.
According to him, vehicles were heading from both directions, which made it impossible to swerve out of the way.
“I was coming off work when the accident happened. It happened so quick.”
The bakkie suffered significant damage to its windscreen and bonnet following the impact.
Both patients were treated at the scene by emergency responders, while Lydenburg SAPS and local traffic officers managed traffic flow.
Part of Voortrekker Street has been cordoned off for an investigation.

The patients suffered severe injuries, including various fractures, head trauma, and possible internal injuries.
They were stabilised on the scene and transported to Lydenburg Provincial Hospital for urgent medical care.
