Murder accused Marco Schalekamp appeared in the Nelspruit Regional Court on September 4, and will return on December 4 after his defence requested additional time to consult.

During the brief appearance, the state indicated it was ready to proceed, but Magistrate Simon Fankomo postponed the case at the request of the defence.

Schalekamp is facing charges of murder and attempted murder following a shooting incident near the White River Rugby Club on June 5, 2025. Pieter Burger was fatally shot, while state witness Arno van Niekerk sustained multiple gunshot wounds at the scene.

Bail conditions allow overseas travel

It has been more than a year since Schalekamp was released on bail following a Mpumalanga High Court appeal ruling on September 4, 2025. His latest bail amendment, granted on July 1, allows him to travel abroad for business purposes.

Alongside his existing bail conditions, Schalekamp must notify the investigating officer or branch commander in writing before any trip, and provide a full itinerary of his intended travel.

The court ordered the investigating officer to return Schalekamp’s passport to facilitate his travel. During his bail hearing, the White River Magistrate’s Court heard that he frequently travels overseas for work.
