Motorists driving along the N4 between Komatipoort and the Lebombo Port of Entry have been warned to exercise caution due to heavy traffic congestion.

The warning was issued by the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison (DCSSL) after trucks were reportedly driving into oncoming traffic in an attempt to beat the queue.

“We have noted with great concern that impatient truck drivers are driving towards oncoming traffic. This will not be tolerated. We have deployed our traffic officials to deal with the situation urgently,” said DCSSL spokesperson Moeti Mmusi.

Mmusi warned that truck drivers who break the law face heavy fines and possible arrest.

“Their actions endanger the lives of other road users. We shall not hesitate to impound the trucks if the need arises,” he said.

A stranded motorist, Dura Maphosa, said he was forced to park on the side of the road.

“Imagine driving towards a long queue of trucks facing oncoming traffic! You are left with no option but to park on the roadside,” said Maphosa.

He said traffic officers were on the scene but appeared overwhelmed by the situation.
