If only I knew the names or the car registration numbers of the two people who I caught littering and dumping this week – our city is truly a dumping ground for these thoughtless, irresponsible, stupid people who trash our streets and parking areas.

One was a very attractive young blonde woman in the Steiltes Shopping Complex who opened the door of her neat and new (thus unregistered) little yellow/orange Renault Clio and threw out two pieces of paper, probably the till slips from her purchases.
When I tapped on her window to ask her if she’d like to get out and pick it up, she replied, “not really” – so I bent down and removed them both from under the vehicle. I proceeded to show her as she was reversing, that there really was a rubbish bin close to the sidewalk.

I honestly thought and would still like to believe that education of our young people would eventually save our city from drowning in trash, but obviously any lessons mean nought to her. And to the man who gave two bags of “rubbish” – recyclable wine bottles and assorted plastic cold-drink and juice bottles to a car guard at The Village Complex, asking him to dump them into one of the trash containers on the sidewalk in front of the dry cleaners – why don’t you recycle this stuff yourself? I took your rubbish and disposed of it responsibly.

Do yourself a favour and travel down to the dump site opposite the licensing offices – there a group of women sort through piles of discarded stuff – often dirty and unwashed stuff to salvage anything recyclable which they then sell to the waste companies for cash.

The 17 wine bottles the guard would have dumped into the rubbish bin at the shopping centre would have provided those women with much-needed income – so don’t be a selfish litterbug and dumper – do something positive and useful and I’ll be the first to congratulate you when I see you at the waste site.
