Oh my word! The Sharks match this weekend was absolutely legend! Never before have I witnessed a game that brought so much satisfaction afterwards! Seriously!
We were two players down at one stage, 13 against “16” – and to the absolute dismay of all Crusaders fans, The Sharks went ahead and won the match! Moments like these make me the proudest Sharks fan ever!
It was nail-biting, teeth gritting and absolutely nerve-wracking! But boy oh boy, what a win!!! Hubby and I celebrated for the rest of the day, and Stormers and Cheetahs didn’t disappoint later on either.
So now Sharks are 5 points ahead on the log, and though critics are saying they aren’t scoring enough tries, only 21 in 12 matches – 15 of which came in their first six matches. Only? Only 21 in 12? Come on! I am no serious expert, but if that means Sharkies are on top, imagine how they would leave everyone else in their dust if they did score more tries?
Before Saturday’s game, their last five fixtures only yielded three tries, compared to the Chiefs and Brumbies who, also before Saturday scored 12 and 14 tries respectively from the same number of games. The argument is that when the Sharks played the Brumbies, all their points came from the boot.
And so what? Maybe they didn’t strike a perfect balance between defence and attack, according to former Springbok flyer, Ashwin Willemse, but after Saturday, no one can question the Sharks’ defence. Impeccable!
Said Willemse: “Everyone is complaining that the Sharks are kicking too much ball away and forgetting the fact that they are a defensively orientated unit that can attack.
The biggest challenge for the Sharks now is being able to change their approach during the game, something they will have to put into practice quickly against the Crusaders.”

Very wise words, Willemse, because they did just that on Saturday. Little did you know that they would indeed put it into practice against the Crusaders, and then some!
Interestingly, The Sharks have never won the Super Rugby competition, though making it to the final four times. They first participated in Super Rugby when it was still the Super 10, in 1993. Still known as Natal then, they made it to the final in 1994 and lost 21-10, against Queensland.
