Give your family a hand; or a baseball bat; with the Worms series

Video games are an expensive hobby, no matter which platform you play on. Multiplayer games more and more favour online play, which might offer some challenge, but doesn’t help when two people want to play together at home.

For this I recommend the Worms series, an artillery tactical game where two to four people can control cartoon worms wielding a variety of bizarre weapons. The aim? To be the last worm standing! Or crawling.

Weapons given to you range from generic cartoon guns to unique items like the baseball bat, which sends a worm flying when hit, and the holy hand grenade of Monthy Python fame.

If your opponent is in a precarious position, use the finger poke of doom to nudge them over the edge. If you can’t aim at them, try dropping a carpet bomb; an explosive roll of carpet!

The wacky taunts the worms throw at each other through matches help to highlight the games’ light-hearted tone; “I’ll be back,” warns an eliminated worm.

The strategic player can use ropes and jetpacks to get into the perfect position on the randomly generated 2D maps. Or, if you’re impatient, just pull out a superweapon like the concrete donkey and drop it from the sky; friend or foe beware!

The latest entry in the series; Worms W.M.D., was released in 2016, and is available on Steam for R369.
