Editor's note

What is that smell?!

Most people like to wake up nice and easy, maybe even to a steaming cup of coffee on the bedside table. Definitely not wondering WHAT smells like that?!

I woke up this morning, after snoozing my alarm for 50 minutes and realising I had to get a move on or I’d be late for work.

Mid-way the decision process on what I should to do first, it hit me. Not what I should do, but a SMELL.

Remembering the fact that hundreds, if not thousands, of White River residents had to deal with smelly water the past week, I thought it might have reached my neighbourhood.

“Argh! I can’t set foot out of my house without washing my hair,” was my first thought. My second was, “Oh my word! Is this the smell people have had to put up with for DAYS?” Read more about the smelly water here.

Forsaking my usual morning routine, I immediately went to investigate, trying to determine where the disgusting smell was coming from. Checking room after room off my list without success, I realised that I had to hurry up or I would be really late for work.

Driving into town and then to Nelspruit this morning, I was assaulted by a myriad of smells, including the sooty, heavy smell of burning plants (near Bundu Lodge), probably over-sensitive due to my early morning wake-up call.

Now (while typing this and recalling the morning’s smells) I’m struck with the thought that maybe it was something outside my house that caused the smell…and I’m fervently hoping I don’t find a dead lizard or small animal in the garden when I get home this afternoon.

Out of all my senses (including my sixth one), my sense of smell is the most unreliable. Due to various allergies, I regularly struggle with sinus problems, leading to a limited sense of smell most of the time.

As I’m a baker, I love the smell of baked goods and that’s probably why I’m good at detecting weird or wonderful food smells. I’ve often told people that I wished they could bottle the smell of freshly baked bread or croissants and sell it as room freshener (you can imagine the strange looks I get every time I mention it).

A born and bred Bushveld farm girl and former owner of dozens of dogs, I’m also well aquainted with the various disgusting wet-dog, rolled-in-dead-animal and expired wildlife smells. Which is probably why I have lots of room fresheners and spray bottles with lavender water in my house, just in case.

What has been the worst smell you’ve ever come across and is there a smell you particularly love? Let me know in the comments below or on facebook!
