Golf day raise thousands for rhino’s

An annual golf day in order to raise funds to stop rhino poaching was held on Tuesday August 22 at Nelspruit Golf Club and a total of R50 000 was raised on the day!

This great event gave conservationists and golfing enthusiasts a chance to meet and to contribute towards ongoing efforts to reduce poaching.

Since the start of the epidemic in 2008 South Africa has lost over 2 000
rhino – a figure that, despite so much effort, increases daily. Coupled with the
increasing poaching figure comes the question – why after all this are we still losing more rhino than ever? Sadly, few people realise the challenges facing those on the front lines – thousands of kilometres to patrol with little or no idea of where the thieves plan to hit next. At this stage the poachers have the upper hand – they know when, they know how, and if need be, they’ll just come back another day or hit a softer target.
The figures are soaring despite so much effort by so many good people. That said, too many rhino still die because of ineffective systems, the lack of political will, empathy and sheer negligence. StopRhinopoaching.com will continue to channel funding towards specific projects, putting as much as possible into areas containing larger
populations, managed by dedicated and responsible conservation-minded rhino
owners/custodians. There are many groups doing their bit in areas where they
can make a difference. “Our focus is on the rangers, anti-poaching units, security and managers – the thin green line that stands between the poachers and the rhino. Some days are soul-destroying – the sheer vastness and cruelty of what we are up against is overwhelming, but no matter how bad it gets, the effort has to continue. No matter what, all of you, please don’t give up,” said Elise Daffue, founder of StopRhinoPoaching.
