Runners shuffle through forest

The 34th Sabie Shufflers race took place at the York Timber Sport Ground on September 21.

Runners could choose from a number of different races, which included a 4,9km fun run, a 10km, a 21,1km and a 32km off-road race.

Affiliated with Athletics South Africa , these routes take place on “jeep tracks” and
forestry roads. All participants received medals for their efforts.

Spectators were encouraged to support them as they ran in terrible weather conditions through the scenic countryside as they took on the rolling Mpumalanga hills.

The idea for the race was formed in 1979 when Jane and Jo Schwenke came to
Sabie to work for the Sustainable African Forest Institute.
The first event was on September 1, 1979 and won by Geoff Deeny of Springs Striders in two hours, two minutes and 27 seconds. Since then there had been two occasions when it had to be cancelled due to high fire risk and sponsorship.
Due to York Timbers that became the main sponsor in 2012, prize money of R11 000 across all categories (open, junior, 40+, 50+, 60+ and walker) became
possible.
