Pumas through to finals

The Steval Pumas registered a 52-33 victory over the SWD Eagles on Friday night to secure a home Currie Cup First Division final.

The final will be played against the EP Kings on Friday October 11.
The Mbombela Stadium faithfuls were quiet for much of the game as the Pumas battled to gel and the Eagles looked hungry for a win.
The Eagles were the better team in the first half even though the Pumas led 20-16 at the break.
Eagle Clinton Wagman claimed the first try of the game, while fullback, Justin van Staden added the conversion and three penalties in the first half.
Corne Steenlamp and Stefan Watermeyer scored for the Pumas in the first half.
The Pumas made too many enforced errors. They played well in spurts but never seemed to get out of fourth gear. Considering this was their 15th Currie Cup match of the season and they had won the previous 14, they looked very ordinary in the first half.
When the players went back to the change rooms for the half-time break
there was an eerie feeling of “we could lose this one”, among the small
contingent of Pumas supporters.
The Eagles hit the Pumas hard early in the second half with Anver Venter and Alshaun Bock scoring tries. The home team were seven points down and had 22 minutes minutes to salvage their pride and their Currie Cup campaign. To much relief they did this in style.

The team suddenly clicked and started playing the expansive rugby that has seen them score 76 tries in 14 matches.
A four-try blitz put the match beyond the Eagles reach. Coenie van Wyk, RW Kember, Renaldo Bothma and Doppies le Roux claimed the tries.
Fans made a big noise for a small crowd as their team ran the Eagles ragged.
Carl Bezuidenhout kicked four penalties and five conversions in the match. He has scored 198 points in the 2013 Currie Cup Campaign and is expected to pass the 200 mark in the final.
The Steval Pumas will take on their arch rivals, the EP Kings, at 19:10 on Friday at Mbombela Stadium. The Kings and the Leopards finished the 80 minutes on 22-all in their semi-final. The match went to extra time with the Kings earning a hard-fought 32-29 victory.
On October 13, 2012 the EP Kings won the Currie Cup First Division trophy with a 26-25 victory at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. A year is a long time to wait.

Tickets are on sale at Computicket and the stadium.
