Despite losing Rudi Mathee after he was stretchered off the field (to be replaced by Eduan van der Walt), and playing with 14 men for ten minutes, after Renaldo Bothma made a high and dangerous tackle, the Steval Pumas went into half time with a 16-12 lead.

The Currie Cup promotion match is being played at Mbombela Stadium.

Gous Prinsloo put the visitors 3-0 up early in the third minute.

Coenie van Wyk broke through the Griquas defence and passed to Stefan Watermeyer to score. JC Roos added the two points and also kicked two penalties.

Prinsloo nailed three more penalties for Griquas.

With five minutes of play left in the first half, Roos kicked a drop goal after a sustained period of attack in the Griquas 22-metre area.

The first 40 was played at a frantic pace. The two teams threw everything at each other, much to the delight of 8 000 delighted spectators.

With possession even and with both teams making use of the width of the field the rugby was exhilarating.

The Pumas defence was rock solid and a 30th minute try was disallowed after the TMO ruled Griquas had knocked on.

The Steval Pumas handled all that Griquas hit them with.

This game is too to call.
