Young riders do it again

For two consecutive years the cycling team of Hoërskool Lydenburg proved yet again what an incredible force they are by winning a floating trophy for the best overall performance based on the 15km and 30km results during the Alzu Tour de Farm race this past weekend.

According to Sheena Clark, a parent, the
terrain was very different to what the riders were used to. “With a warm 29°C, a
strong headwind and dusty conditions, the 24 high-school riders tackled the flat
track with enthusiasm, resulting in hard pedalling most of the time and an
average speed of 30km/hour for the front riders.” With great support from
parents as well as their coaches, Ronel du Toit and Gerrit-Jan Dorfling who also
participated, none of the other 750 competitors managed to stand in the way of the team.
It was not only the high school who brought good news home,
but
Reinhardt Viljoen of Laerskool Lydenburg also managed to secure a second
position in the 15km race, while Constant Furstenburg received gold. In the same
distance Julius Ackerman crossed the line in fourth position while Jessica
Schulz was the second girl in.
Dorfling got the best overall senior men
award in the 30km category while four high school riders ended in the top 12.
“The high school’s MTB team has definitely developed their skills and stamina in
the past year under the guidance of Dorfling and Du Toit and exposing the team
to a variety of events, they have ensured they are a well-rounded unit,” Clark
said.
