Cousins win Berlin trail
The I'langa Series Berlin Trail took place in Kaapsehoop on Saturday. The 20km was won by cousins, Johart and Arlo van Heerden, both knocking more than 16 minutes off the course record.

There were three different runs, 6-, 12- and 10km, through the village turning right towards the Kaapsehoop Overnight Hut.
All routes are run on the renowned Berlin Hiking Trail on land managed by Komatiland Forests.
The trail distances and return loops were identified by a Comrades gold medallist, Rudi du Plessis, now a village resident. He has the
privilege of maintaining the routes and gets to spend his days in settings one can only dream of. His knowledge of the area, its ecology and history, is extremely fascinating.
White Route 6,4km
Running most of the way on existing trails, this route was a combination of single and jeep track, and some graded dirt roads.
Once out of the village it followed the Kaapshehoop Florence Hills path all along the escarpment edge. The 50m detour to the lookout at 2,2km was worth the delay.
Runners then set off along the escarpment offering a spectacular view (weather permitting). At 4,3km they left the 20- and 12km trails, turning right down a gravel jeep track to the main tarred road.
Participants ended their run at the Pear Orchard.

Blue Route 11,4km
At the 6km mark the trail left the 20km route and cut across to
return from Florence Hills where it rejoined the trail. After running alongside forestry plantations with enormous pine trees, runners passed the stone miner’s hut on the left (8,8km) and the diggings on the right. It was pretty much downhill all the way home from there.

Third: Hendrik Tryhou.
Red Route 20km
After passing Adam’s Calendar (7,7km), an interesting archeological site, the trail headed around the escarpment towards the Trig Beacon at the 8,5km mark at a height of 1 706m.
The route cut across to the return path from Florence Hills about 4km short of the hut. Participants started a steady climb back to 1 695m. After running through the plantations, the course rejoined the 12km route, past the stone miner’s hut on the left (18km) and the diggings on the right.
