Runners enjoy Christmas trial in Botanical Gardens
A total of 487 runners took to the Lowveld Botanical Garden for the Mopani Run/Walk for Life Christmas race on Saturday.
Manager of Run/Walk for Life Nelspruit, Tracey Cresswell said that this was the biggest botanical garden race they have had since inception three years ago. “We had 187 pre-entries and a further 300 on the day. We were also thrilled to see the most children at one race than ever before – a whopping 180,” she said.
Laerskool Bergland had 68 learners take part on the day, which won the school a Mopani gift card to the value of R5 000.
Runners were encouraged to bring gifts to be donated to Child Welfare. The basket that was provided for this goal was quickly filled and gifts had to be placed next to it. “It was remarkable to see such goodwill from
the entrants. We also had a cash donation box at the 5km-race registration table, which contributed to a total of R2 000 which we donated to Child Welfare.”
The Nelspruit branch was ranked in the top position at the annual
Run/Walk For Life Convention held in Sandton on November 2, having achieved the biggest growth countrywide in the history of the group. “With a growth of 134% in just five months, Nelspruiters are definitely are on the move,” Cresswell joked.
