All eyes are set on the grand prize
More than 500 pupils of Penryn College gathered on the sport field to participate in the Coca-Cola 30 Minutes of Heroes Challenge on Tuesday morning.

The Coca-Cola team launched this challenge at the end of last year to give
over 200 schools the oppurtunity to compete for the grand prize of an outdoor gym worth R200 000.
Hoërskool Lydenburg and Secunda High are also in the running for this grand prize. “The aim is to get learners to be more active, even if it’s for 30 minutes a day,” said the intune communications and entertainment manager, Phindile Sihlangu.
Matric pupil of Penryn, Alex Moldovanos made a large contribution by going through the circuit four times.
With just 10 minutes into the game, 46 pupils had already gone through the circuit and by the last 10, there were 91. The final score may not be announced as there are still a few schools that need to take up the challenge.
The challenge consists of five cricket-related activities, run as a circuit. They are:
• Shuttle drill – they must run from beacon to beacon collecting and
moving a mini-cricket ball from one to the next
• Throwing on target – they
have three chances to hit a set of spring-loaded stumps
• Skipping – they
must skip for 10 counts
• Catching – they must catch three balls off the
rebound board
• Slalom poles – teens must weave in and out of 10 slalom
poles.
How does the challenge work?
Those participating in the challenge
must try to get as many fellow learners as possible to complete the circuit in a 30-minute period.
Each learner to complete the full circuit within the time period will count as one point for the school. Only those who have finished the
complete circuit will be counted toward points for the school.
A learner
must cross the finish line in order to be counted, and those still within the
circuit once time has elapsed will not be counted.
“At the end of the
promotional competition period, all the schools’ points will be compared to
determine a winner. The date that winners will be announced has not been
finalised yet,” said Sihlangu.
