Golfers unite to help the needy

Golf is a popular pastime and after a recent round one Sunday a group of friends decided to put an initiative in place to invite other golfers to participate in a social league, whereby funds could be raised for the less fortunate within the community.

LYDENBURG – According to one of the organisers, Mike Edwards, the Gophers was formed essentially to give back to our community. “What
better way to do it than by doing something we enjoy. Gophers Golf League was therefore launched at Lydenburg Golf Club and those who participated were the first to contribute to this cause.”
To ensure its success, Gophers Golf are requesting local and (not so local) businesses get involved.
This can be in the way of sponsoring prizes for golf outings, a cash donation towards the fund or even sponsoring caps or golf shirts for the group.
“All donations will be properly managed by an appointed standing committee to ensure the correct distribution of the sponsorships.

Gophers is a club managed by a standing committee who is eager and ready to take this social club to great heights and you as a valued sponsor can help us achieve our goal of helping others while doing something we love.”
Edwards said the Gophers would compete twice monthly at various local golf courses including Lydenburg, Pilgrim’s Rest, Tubatse Chrome Club and Sabie.
League log points will be earned during each golf day and added on the official Gophers log. League leaders will also receive special prizes after every four rounds played.

Prizes will be presented to players at the end of each golf day.
“Non-handicapped players are very welcome and will receive a “Gophers handicap” after four games. Players who are not club members will be encouraged to join any of the local clubs and to receive their official handicap after being affiliated.

Gophers Golf hereby invites interested sponsors to join our golf league and to become part of what we believe is going to be the next best thing in the area since Kruger’s visit,” Edwards concluded.
