Pumas gain momentum in their Currie Cup campaign
After four Vodacom Cup league matches, the Steval Pumas are slowly but surely gaining momentum in their 2014 season's objectives after their 25-16 victory over the GWK Griquas at Mbombela Stadium on Friday night.

Apart from the fact that the visitors scored two tries compared to the one from the Pumas, it was
the kicking boot of JC Roos who secured the win for the home team.
Roos accumulated 20 of his team’s points, missing only two attempts to the uprights.
The five pointer for the Pumas was scored by captain, Corné Steenkamp after a great driving mall. Steenkamp had the coaching team worried after he had left the field close to the end on a stretcher with a suspected neck injury.
But according to team doctor Kobus Hugo, he took a knock to the head, which left him with a burning sensation in his arm. But luckily he only sustained a concussion and will be rested for the forthcoming weekend’s encounter in Polokwane against the Assupol Limpopo Blue Bulls.
The other concern for Jimmy Stonehouse is the thigh injury sustained by the live-wire loose-head prop Vincent Koch during the captain’s run on Thursday evening. Koch was withdrawn from the squad on Friday morning and replaced by Sabelo Nhlapo.
The Pumas was in control for the match but the ill-discipline of the Kimberley boys cost the visitors valuable points.
“I wasn’t concerned that we would lose the match, but I don’t think we used all our opportunities to the fullest.
“This week we’ll have to work on our line-out as Friday night’s performance was shocking,” Stonehouse said.
“We have to up our game against the stronger teams, and we can’t afford to allow soft tries like we did on Friday night,” he concluded.
This victory puts the Lowveld champions at the top of the log with 17 points, followed by the Golden Lions with 14 and the GWK Griquas with 13.
A hard week of preparation lies ahead for the Pumas before they travel to Polokwane.
