Lowveld athletes take on Ironman

The 10th anniversary of Ironman South Africa provided spectators and participants alike with their fair share of excitement.

Four Lowvelders competed in the event in Port Elizabeth on April 6.
Justin Victor, Mark Penter, Karin Hannweg and Annelize Penter took up the challenge and finished the race. The swim course changed slightly as the athletes had to do one 3,8km loop. On the bike, they had to do two loops of 90km. The run was a three-loop course of 14,07km.
This was Victor’s first full Ironman. “I did quite well, as I finished in 13 hours and 11 minutes. The race was exceptionally hard, with a bad headwind on the bike leg. Having to race the entire day also messed with my mind a bit.
“There were many times when I wanted to throw in the towel. So to have finished this event is truly an achievement and I’ll definitely be back next year.”
