Lowveld High ready for football cup

Mpumalanga's Ehlanzeni district will continue on their road to the 2014 Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup football tournament finals by staging their play-offs at the Cefups Academy School on May 13.

On offer is R3,4 million in prize money, with the winning school receiving a whopping R1 million.

Lowveld High School, Edgeview Academy, St Mark’s High, Mathews Phosa College, Entabamhlophe Combined, Valencia Combined, Cefups Academy and Cyril Clarke Secondary School will be competing in the challenge.

Lowveld High ex-pupil and now coach, Bongani Ronald Masimango, explained they would be competing in the tournament for the fifth time and they were hoping to make it to the provincial finals, which they
had done once before back in 2012 when they were knocked out in the semifinals.

“We are going into the tournament with a positive attitude, not looking back at previous years’ results. We train twice a week and usually have a friendly match against local teams on Wednesdays. I can see that the team is getting stronger by the day. In a month’s time every player will have reached his full potential,” said Masimango.

His team will be boosted by four players he believes are PSL material. Romario Nkambule (striker), Khehla Kubhayi (midfielder), Excellent Mabuza (midfielder) and Menzi Maseko (striker), have the skills and technique to go far in the game, he said.

“They have grown into great sportsmen and I hope that their skills are noticed by the scouts attending.”

Lack of confidence has let the team down in the past, he believes, and he has made some coaching changes to counteract this. “I have an open policy with the team, whatever input they bring in I take into consideration and tell them that the team is ours, not mine alone.”

His strategy for this year’s Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup tournament is simple. “It’s all about winning, we want to score a minimum of five goals per game, to make sure that we are at the top of the log.”
