Ford ST race well organised

Speed junkies descended on the town at the start of the weekend for the annual Barberton Ford ST races.

The main event, however, took place on Sunday. From 08:00 onwards contestants were given a chance to test their driving abilities and push their vehicles to the limit. This is a chance they do not often get, as the race is on a public road.

Part of the R40, from the four-way stop at Medi-Clinic to the turn-off at Emjindini, was once again closed off by Umjindi traffic officials.

Like previous races, Barberton EMS was present and the traffic department was tasked with monitoring speeds and ensuring the safety of participants and spectators.

During the first few hours of the event, an official from the traffic department threatened to have it cancelled due to participants not following the rules. This was after one had gained unauthorised entry from the barricaded road at the Emjindi turn-off. This happened while the race was in progress and could have resulted in serious consequences.

A matter that should be addressed in future, is the behaviour of kids and other pedestrians. On numerous occasions traffic officials had to caution children as well as people on foot to stay clear of the road.

Apart from that, everything was well organised by Umjindi Officials and Barberton Ford alike, and all those who attended appeared to have had a good time.
