Local rider ready for Toyota 1000 Desert Race
Riders can expect to be pushed beyond their limits from start to finish in this years Toyota 1000 Desert Race - a grueling 1000 km.
Local rider, Bernard McGee, is all fired up and ready for the biggest social and sporting event in Botswana – the annual Toyota 1000 Desert Race – which kicks off tomorrow (Friday).
After being based at Kumakwane on the outskirts of Gaborone for a number of years, the race has moved to Jwaneng, about 160km west of the Botswana capital this year. Here riders can expect to be pushed beyond their limits when competing for the podium over a grueling 1000 km.
Riders will be competing in a 100km route qualifying race tomorrow to determine grid positions, where after two loops of approximately 225km will await them on the second day.
The third and final day will see competitors complete two loops of approximately 190km.
This is what route director, Adri Roets, had to say on what competitors can expect:
“The area had good rains in the wet season, and vegetation is nice and green.The route, however, is going to be dry and very sandy with all the rocks, bushes and tree stumps part and parcel of this race.”
The winners of the Desert Race and the invitation motorcycle race will receive free entries into next year’s Dakar Rally.
