10 best moments of the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony
The 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow held a colourful and exciting opening ceremony that had many highlights. Here are ten of the best.
1) The Queen arrives and national anthem.
The Queen’s arrival sparked massive cheers as the 88 year old looked dashing in her all white dress. She officially opened the ceremony which promises to be an exciting event
2) Famous Celebrities
A host of famous celebrities and ambassadors of UNICEF each had an important part to play at the opening ceremony. Actor, Ewan McGregor welcomed the Commonwealth, while cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and Cyclist Sir Chris Hoy and many others made for a star studded event.
3) UNICEF charity donation
One of the best aspects of the opening ceremony was the charity aspect of the event, where children were put first. UNICEF gave viewers the opportunity to donate to charity through a text message and make history around the Commonwealth.
4) Bag pipes and kilt Scottish culture
The cheerful and iconic sounds of traditional bag pipes and the colourful nature of tartan plaid kilt gave a unique atmosphere that was quintessentially Scottish.
5) Athletes of South Africa
The South African team arrived in bright yellow shirts with much hope resting on swimming hero Chad Le Clos to bring in the medals. Also look out for the South Africa’s Sevens team – the Blitzbokke.
6) Rod Stewart and residents of Glasgow sing Rhythm of my heart.
Legendary singer and songwriter Rod Stewart ended off a charming song started off by hundreds of Glasgow residents singing the tune.
7) Nelson Mandela video tribute
Nelson Mandela’s legacy remained one of the focal points of the Commonwealth Games. Glasgow awarded him the freedom of the city 28 years ago, and was one of the main supporters in his fight for freedom.
8) Running of the Baton.
The running of the Queen’s baton started on 9 October 2013 and travelled 190 000 kilometres over 288 days before the final runner presented the baton to the Queen at the Opening Ceremony. The baton had a message from the Queen inside which welcome all the Commonwealth nations to the Games.
9) Karen Dunbar and John Barrowman’s musical introduction to Scotland
Scottish comedian Karen Dunbar and actor John Barrowman opened the Games with song and dance which received rapturous applause from the audience.
10) Nessie makes an appearance
The fabled Loch Ness Monster also made its way onto the stage and was a sight to be seen with the beloved “Nessie” being surrounded by singers and dancers.
