Das Auto concludes with fifth stage

Fierce action on the course concluded the Das Auto off-road mountain biking series last week.

The Das Auto off-road mountain-biking event came to a close on Saturday of last week with the fifth and final leg held at Penryn College.

This time riders were welcomed by a warm and sunny day before embarking on their 50km, 25km or 15km rides. Since it was the final event, various categories were fiercely contested and the racing proved to be as hot as the previous four stages.

Nico Bell (31) was the winner of the 50km race with a time of 01.50:32. Hot on his heels was Josef Bester (20) with a time of 01.54:07 followed by JP Jung (26) with 01.56:10. Sixteen-year-old Andreas Kuhn (01.59:33) came in fourth overall, beating fifth-place Nohan van Tonder (01.59:34) by a mere second on the clock.

Henry Schurink’s 02.12:02 was enough to make him the fastest master rider and placed him 13th overall. Among the women Ruth le Roux(02.30:15) was the fastest veteran, Lousanne Ackerman (02.34:25) the fastest sub-veteran and Elizabeth Delport (02.39:24) the fastest master.

Teenagers dominated the 25km race. Sean de Klerk (16) finished first in a time of 57:54, followed closely by Blessing Moima (18) with 57:56. Reghardt Wiehman (17) finished in exactly one hour, placing him third overall.

The top female riders in their categories were junior Mandie Swart (01.12:29), senior Kirsten Gillespie (01.12:37), veteran Karin Cilliers (01.18:17), youth Jessica Schulz (01.24:27), master Noddie Knibbs (01.28:39) and subveteran Marita Raath (01.30:18). The fastest riders over 15km were Ryan Terry (36:04), Demarco Pillay (36:08) and Emile Fourie (37.33).
