Five Steval Pumas players to look out for against Western Province
The Steval Pumas are geared up for their challenge against the top of the table Western Province team on Friday at the Mbombela Stadium. Here are five players to keep on eye on in this crunch match.
1) Corné Steenkamp
The blindside flanker has been one of the revelations of the season thus far for the Steval Pumas and has lead by example. A strong runner and apt in defence, he provides a solid platform for the Steval Pumas. It will have to be seen if he can carry the extra workload around the loose if Renaldo Bothma is out injured.
2) Vincent Koch
Koch has made the transition from loosehead prop to tighthead prop with consummate ease, earning plaudits from a variety of rugby pundits. His hard work rate in the scrums and in open play will be invaluable for the Steval Pumas, who will be looking to dominate up front to give their attacking backline the opportunity to dictate play.
3) Corné Fourie
The man with the number one on his back will be sure to put in a first class performance against the WP’s Pat Cilliers on Friday night in front of the home fans. Fourie, who spent time with the Lions during the Super 14 season has been using that big match experience to full affect in the Currie Cup. He will be one to watch.
4) Rosko Specman
The 2013 Steval Pumas player of the year has had a good year, but still needs to put in a show stopping performance. It feels as if Spekman’s best performance is yet to come and what better way than for the speedy winger to score some tries in this crucial encounter against the Western Province.
5) Stefan Watermeyer
Mr. Consistent. That is one way to describe Watermeyer’s performances this season as the inside centre has played some of the best rugby of his career thus far. He has been a constant threat on attack and has scored a number of well crafted tries. His rock solid defence has also had pundits talking. Steval pumas fans will hope that Watermeyer continues his good form against Western Province’s dangerous backline that includes Springboks Gio Aplon and Juan de Jongh.
