Leader in cross-country series stamps his authority on criterium

The current leader of the Mpumalanga XCountry Series, JP Jung of Bells Cycling won the most recent criterium racing which takes place every Wednesday around Mbombela Stadium.

Jung, who achieved silver in the Sappi Mankele MTB, has had a great start to the season. Mountain bikers as well as road cyclists took on the criterium challenge, which is a short course often run on closed-off city-centre streets.

Anton van Tonder of The Bicycle Company took the second position with the young and upcoming Ryan Terry of Galito’s in third.

The length can be determined by a number of laps or total time, in which case the number of remaining laps is calculated as the race progresses.

Generally the duration (commonly 40 minutes) is shorter than that of a traditional road race – which can last many hours, however, the average speed and intensity are appreciably higher.

In each event there are prizes (called primes, pronounced “preems”, usually cash) for winning specific intermediate laps. A bell is usually rung to announce to the riders that whoever wins the next lap, wins the prime. The overall winner is determined in the same time.
