Try out a sports game of a different sort
Warm up your throwing arm and join the Marloth Park Players for a game of boule on Saturday mornings.
MARLOTH PARK – Boule is a ball game for teams consisting of one to four players, with each person using two or three boules (fist-sized metal balls).
A coin is tossed to decide the first throw and the winner decides the play area and throws the cochonnet (jack). A circle is drawn to stand in, then the jack is thrown about eight to 10 metres from the circle.
Players from the various teams then take turns trying to get their boules closest to the jack. Once all of them have been thrown, the score is recorded. The team closest to the jack wins one point. Extra points are won for any other boules that the winning team has, which are closer to the jack than the opposition.
The winner then draws a circle around the jack and starts a new end. The game continues until one side scores 13 points. A match consists of three games.
The Marloth Park Players currently consist of Loekie and Fia Snyder, Dirk and Marie Reinecke, Dawie and Grietjie Cronjé, Gert and Lenie Oberholzer, and Justus and Lynette van Wyk. The group is joined by players from other areas from time to time including Ton and Trees Verpoort from the Netherlands. They visit Marloth Park at least twice a year and then join in. During half-time, the players are treated to tea and snacks, supplied free of charge by Riview Restaurant.
The group meets on the first three Saturdays of each month at 08:00 (summer) or 09:00 (winter) at Henk van Rooyen Park, next to the swimming pool. People interested in participating are welcome to drop by and join in.
