Trip of a lifetime for Lowvelder families and friend

"Africa is a beautiful continent and we are the lucky ones who get to travel to some of her countries," said Johan Putter, one of the main organisers of the expedition.

Twenty Lowvelders, comprising of fathers, sons and friends, are heading off to Malawi and Mozambique for an expedition of a lifetime tomorrow.

They aim to kayak 120 kilometres across Lake Malawi and stop at Cahorra Basa Dam for some fishing. Some of the participants will be paddling in single kayaks and others with partners in double kayaks.

Johan Putter, one of the main organisers of the Lowmed Malawi Kayak Enduro, said the initiative of a yearly “boys’ trip” started 10 years ago with a groups of friends taking their sons “into the wild”.

Destinations over the years have included Ethiopia, Zimbabwe and Botswana.

“Africa is a beautiful continent and we are the lucky ones who get to travel to some of her countries,” Putter said.
“We’re taking to the water this year. Usually we go to the bush but we wanted to do something different and more challenging this time around.”

He added that all of the participants had been training hard in anticipation for the physical challenge of tackling Lake Malawi, which is known as Lake Nyasa in Tanzania and Lago Niassa in Mozambique.

They are also looking forward to the fishing on Cahorra Basa, where there are 14-kilogramme tiger fish to be hooked.

“Lowmed is sponsoring the clothing, supplements, the video of the trip and the cost of the daily feedback of our trip on the website,” said Putter.

The expedition will return to Mpumalanga on July 16. To catch daily updates of the action, visit Lowmed Malawi Kayak Enduro on Facebook.
