District’s toughest rugby teams clash for trophy

Komatipoort's Impalas will face off against White River II on Saturday for the Ehlanzeni Mayor's rugby semi-finals and locals are urged to come and support them.

This year’s rugby leagues have mostly been concluded, but a few action-packed matches still lie ahead.

The Ngangala and Gert Sibande mayor’s leagues as well as the Highveld and Ehlanzeni mayor’s reserve-league matches have been concluded.

Teams in the mayor’s league will compete in a crossover knockout series, where the winners of the Lowveld and Highveld will fight for the championship trophy. In a final match, this champion will face the number six team in the premier league to determine promotion.

The two Mayor’s Reserve League winners of each district will compete for the Mpumalanga Reserve Championship.

Nkangala’s league was dominated by Middelburg II after they won seven of their eight games for a total of 34 league points. The Hurricanes came second with 27 points and Ferros II were third with 21 points. Matla and Kriel were fourth and fifth.

In the Gert Sibande Mayor’s League, Standerton I were undefeated with opponents only managing to get 43 points in eight matches. The winning team scored 465 points for a total of 38 league points. Ermelo were in second place with 26 league points, followed by Sasol II with 19, Carolina I with 14 and the Tigers with none.

In the local Ehlanzeni league, Barberton I were top with 43 points, Komatipoort’s Impalas second with 31 points, White River third with 26 points and the Rooikatte fourth with 25 points. Malelane finished fifth and did not qualify for the play-offs. Nelspruit II were sixth with 7 points.

After seven matches, Sasol was at the top of the Premier League with 27 points, followed by Ferros with 23, Middelburg with 20, Nelspruit with 13 (after eight matches) and White River 11.

The two semi-final matches of the Ehlanzeni Mayor’s League will be played in Barberton and Komatipoort on Saturday. Impala Rugby Club urges local fans to come and support them in the match against White River II at 15:30.

The finals of both mayor’s and reserve leagues will be played on July 16 and the provincial finals on July 23.
