A record field of more than 1 250 runners gathered at Halls Gateway Complex on Saturday to compete in the 26th annual Halls race.
The first female to cross the finish line in the 21 kilometres was the 2015 Selati Marathon champion, Noria Sibanda in a time of 01:32:49. Promising local runner, Abednico Mashaba, winner of the 2010 and 2011 Selati, took gold in the 10 kilometres in 30:18. This year’s race was unfortunately marred by an incident of theft where the majority of the entry fees were stolen shortly before the two main events.
Greeff, however, added that this did not take anything away from a great event.
The 21- and 10-kilometre route have remained the same, challenging race for the past few years, taking runners on a sandy track through the famous Halls estate alongside sugar-cane fields, avocado, pecan and litchi orchards, all along the Crocodile River. “The race has grown immensely in the past 26 years,” added Greef. The three-kilometre fun run is always a favourite among the youngsters, and of course the not so fit, and attracts a large number of team entries from local businesses.
