Golfing for a worthy cause

The Peter Cruse Child Welfare Nelspruit Golf Day not only saw a full field of players on Friday, but the fund they strived for was almost doubled.

The aim of this annual event is to benefit and support vulnerable children and families within the community.

This golf day goes back many years and with the help of Mr Peter Cruse himself, and his vigorous fund-raising, the event raised a large amount of money.

The day has subsequently been named after him. After all these years, it is still held annually and although in recent times it has not been a big fund-raiser, it picked up considerably in 2011 with the help of Gary Friend and Gavin Cocks of Hi-Q Nelspruit.

Child Welfare Nelspruit is an NGO and relies on support from the wider community in order to render much-needed services to children from nought to 18 years old and their families.

The aim was to raise over R100 000 during an auction that Lyn Edmondson arranged for them over the years, but above all expectations, almost R200 000 was raised this year.

Lyn’s items up for auction have been lovely works of art, a Mozambican getaway, pampering, wines and more.

Here are the results:
• First place: Scott Kemp, Bennie Pringle, Tobie Pretorius and Dandré Neumeyer.
• Second place: Basie Botha, Hilton Halfpenny, Josef Schabort and Pieter van Zyl.
• Third place: Nicky and Brandon Geere, Schalk Rheeder and Buks Esterhuizen.
