Pumas’ full-back out for the rest of the season

After the Steval Pumas had a bye this weekend, physiotherapist Luzahn Louw has compiled an updated injury report ahead of the team’s next game against Griquas at Mbombela Stadium on Friday. 

New injuries:

  • Justin van Staden had surgery on a fractured toe last Thursday and will be out for 3-4 months.
  • Reynier van Rooyen is sitting out training with an MCL tear and is wearing a brace.
  • Khwezi Mona is visiting a specialist today to determine whether he has to undergo surgery to his left eye socket.
  • Jeremy Jordaan has kidney dysfunction and is sitting out training as he undergoes tests.
  • Brain Shabangu is doing limited training and is undergoing tests to determine whether he may have a heart condition.

Short-term injuries and returning players:

  • Lambert Groenewald will have an MRI scan today to check on the recovery of his calf muscle tear.
  • Stephan Greeff did not need surgery on his shoulder injury but will be out of action for two weeks.
  • Simon Westraad is back to full training (with rehab) after three months out due to a shoulder dislocation.
  • Hoffman Maritz is back to full training (with rehab) after his calf muscle injury.
  • Ruwellyn Isbel is back to full training (with rehab) after his thumb fracture.
  • Marne Coetzee is back to full training (with rehab) after his MCL tear.
  • Heinrich Steyl is being integrated back into training after his hamstring tear.
  • Reuben Johannes will have a field test today to determine whether he is fit to play following a calf muscle strain.

Update on long-term injuries:

  • Johan Herbst is still in rehab for a ruptured bicep. Anticipated date of return is October.
  • Giant Mtyanda is having his left ACL reconstructed in Durban. Anticipated date of return is March 2017.
  • Chris Cloete also has to have his ACL reconstructed.
