Well-known athletes to share knowledge

Athletics enthusiasts will have to jump at the opportunity to be part of the province's one-of-a-kind athletics development clinic presented by Hoërskool Rob Ferreira from September 30 to October 4.

There are still spots open for discus and shot-put athletes.

Leon Verster, who currently coaches at Hoërskool Waterkloof, was coached as a junior athlete by African senior discus record holder, Elizna Naudé. He became national schools champion in 2008. At Waterkloof, he has already helped 20 athletes who participated at the national schools championship. Two of his athletes also achieved national colours, and represented South Africa at the World Junior Championship, with one claiming a bronze. He works with discus athletes under his “just throw it” initiative.

Dewald van Heerden is a three-time SA schools national champion and holds three national school records, in three different age groups. He competed at the World Junior Championship and was crowned Africa Junior champion in 2009 and was a zone six discus and shot-put champion in 2010. He was also crowned SA u/23 champion and competed at the Africa Senior Games. As a coach he has already produced three SA school champions.

Rob Ferreira also will host the South African Cross Country championships on Saturday October 1.

For the first time since 2010, the Lowveld will also host an Athletics South Africa coaching clinic presented by well-known Hugo Badenhorst.
