Karatekas impress at grading and checks

Black-belt grading and checks for Haedong Kumdo Korean sword and Tang Soo Do Korean karate were held at Wolves Academy in Mbombela last weekend.

The grading was done by masters Awie Davis and Xander Davis. Awie said he was impressed with the standard of results.

“All styles have a syllabus according to which students must be trained. After students have successfully passed the colour-belt gradings, they can be accepted to be graded to black belt,” he said.

He added that it will usually take three or four years for a student to be accepted to graded for a black belt. The word “dan” refers to the different ranks of the grading.

Awie explained that the number of dans in each martial art form depends on style.

“For example, our grandmaster, Eddie Jacobsen, is an eight dan and I am a fifth,” he said.
Grading is usually held twice a year, the first in Johannesburg and the second in Mbombela.
