A last minute strike by Aubrey Modiba shattered their hopes of league honours at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday evening.

The draw also did not help SuperSport in the final sprint for Absa Premier League glory.

Chiefs supporters packed the stadium to witness what they hoped would be a revenge game after being ousted from the Nedbank Cup by the same team seven days earlier. That game ended in a 1-1 draw and SuperSport won on penalties, 5-4.

The draw on Saturday left Chiefs and SuperSport supporters disappointed. But they were happy with the fighting spirit displayed by both teams, which produced excellent soccer from both teams on the day.

Kaizer Chiefs coach, Steve Komphela was visibly disappointed with the draw after his side were leading 2-1.
During a post-match interview he said, “It was really difficult, but you still have to come through the full 90 minutes.

I thought after the first half we could have gone into the dressing room two or three goals up, but I felt as well the marking was not proper. Sometimes there’s a need for us to be a little more professional and commit the foul if need be, take one for the team. The yellow cards are there for the referees to use so if it means you have to bring him down, stop the momentum, get a yellow, it should happen, on the condition you’re not on a first booking so that it doesn’t become a red.

“I thought the energy was okay, we just regret the chances we didn’t take, and again lapses of concentration – there are days when we felt we could have managed better. We failed there and we paid the price. It shouldn’t have been 2-2, it should have been 4-2 to Chiefs.”

Chiefs captain Siphewe Tshabalala opened the scoring in the 14th minute and SuperSport equalised in the 23rd minute through former Chiefs’ player, Mandla Masango.

Tshabalala struck the back of the net once again in the 35th minute and the draw was sealed by Aubrey Modiba in the 90th minute.
