Naturals win Gaydon Shield Cup

The Gaydon has to be the most relaxed of all the major club events with a most wonderful ambience played in the true Corinthian spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie.

To say that LVCC Bowling Club went from “the sublime to the ridiculous” this weekend would not be fair; to say that The Gaydon Shield, hosted by LVCC, could not be more different than the masters, would be much more accurate.

The week before, by invitation only, duly segregated mens and ladies masters played at two different venues at LVCC and Matumi respectively.

The Gaydon has to be the most relaxed of all the major club events with a most wonderful ambience played in the true Corinthian spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie.

It explains why teams come from far and wide to take part, and why, despite many top local bowlers playing elsewhere, two full greens of 24 teams locked in combat.

Teams were made up of four bowlers of any combination and ranged from the very serious four provincial players, two u/20 units using the competition as a form of squad practice, to the social bowlers from Jock Pub and Grill who as usual gave the regular players a good run for their money.

Over a somewhat wintry weekend they were treated to six matches of 10 ends each, split into three sessions in a well-organised open pre-determined draw.

At the end of the day, after many swings of fortune, The Mighty Ducks stepped up to collect their sportsman prize for finishing in 24th place, while at the other end of the scale The Naturals, all from Malalane Bowls Club, took first place.

The shield and the money, by a single point, was of Einstein and the Blondies in second, and The Bowling Stones in third place – also one point behind the winners.
