Junior, Lowazi has sights set on becoming title-holders

The Kenneth McArthur Stadium will be swarmed by hundreds of junior athletes as they come to showcase their talent at the Sub-Youth Interprovincial Championships in Potchefstroom this Saturday.

Jumping sensation from Hoërskool Rob Ferreira, Junior Mondlane (u/15), has entered for three events; namely long jump, 100-metre hurdles and triple jump.

Junior had his sights set on the long jump at the Mediclinic Nelspruit Interhigh, with the hopes of breaking a 34-year-old record of 6,46 metres. He missed the distance by 0,2 metres.

Shana Scott.

During two pre-season meetings he managed a personal best distance of 6,98 metres. Lowazi Mogodiri, who will also be in action in the long jump, jumped a distance of 6,97 metres during the Marius Lengton Prestige meeting in Polokwane earlier this year. The South African record for boys u/15 in this event is 6,96 metres.

“We have great expectations for the two boys. Robbies’ athletes have produced several records at meetings, but we have not yet produced a South African title-holder,” said sports organiser at Rob, Stefan van der Merwe.

Hoërskool Nelspruit’s Shana Scott (u/15) will show her worth in the shot-put, hammer throw and discus events. At the South African School Championships, she placed seventh in hammer throw. During the Noordvaal Silver Interhigh Meeting at Pilditch in March, Shana set a record of 35,88 metres in discus.

Charmley Mdluli of Curro Nelspruit will also be an athlete to keep an eye on Saturday. He will compete in the 400-metre hurdles event for boys u/15. At the Triple J meeting last month, he set a record in the 400-metre hurdles with a time of 0:54,97.
