Erica represented SA in Sudan

Uniswim Nelspruit's Erica Sibande won 11 gold medals and a trophy during the recent CANA Zone Three Swimming Championships in Sudan.

The 15-year-old got a trophy for being the swimmer of the competition in her age group.

She was representing South Africa, and was the only swimmer from Mpumalanga who participated in the CANA Zone Three Championships.

She was selected by Swimming South Africa to be part of the national team.The South Africa team performed excellently and she was among those who did exceptionally well in Sudan.

She completed the 100-metre backstroke in 1:16.28.

She completed the 50-metre backstroke in 35.71 and she finished the 100-metre freestyle in 1:11.23.

Jasper Venter, coach of Uniswim, said she was the best swimmer in her age group.

She is currently getting ready for the Mpumalanga Championships, which will be held over the weekend.

“During the upcoming competition she needs to qualify to participate in all the national championships that will take place next year around April or March. The South African team are usually selected from the results of that competition,” he said.

Over the 2017/18 season she improved her personal best times by almost 20 per cent.

Erica, a learner from Curro Nelspruit, said she started swimming with UniSwim when she was only three years old.

The CANA Zone Three Championships was her first time swimming outside of South Africa.
“I have been swimming for 12 years and it was exciting to finally compete outside of the country.
It was hot there, though it was nice,
“she said.”
